Following a study by the University of the Free State, it was revealed that hormone-disrupting chemicals have been found in nine popular pad and pantyliner brands used in South Africa.

These hormone-disrupting chemicals are also known as endocrine chemical disruptors (ECDs), which affect the endocrine system, which is responsible for regulating menstrual cycles, fertility, puberty, mood, and development.

Concerns arise when young, developing females are exposed to these products long-term, which can cause health issues in the future, including cervical cancer, endometriosis and infertility.
