Here’s when South Africans need to register for local government elections
· The South African

As South Africa moves closer to the upcoming municipal council elections, the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has reminded all eligible voters to register at their place of ordinary residence and to vote where they are registered once the election date is announced.
To facilitate this, the IEC has announced a voter registration weekend on 20-21 June 2026, aimed at making registration more accessible and broadening electoral participation.

“The intended outcome of the registration weekend is to facilitate access to franchise and broaden electoral participation,” the Commission said in a statement.
Key steps following registration
Once voter registration is complete, the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs is expected to proclaim the election date.
The proclamation of the election date will trigger important election processes, including:
- Certification and publication of the voters’ roll
- Inspection of the voters’ roll and lodging of objections
- Consideration and adjudication of objections by the Commission
- Submission of candidate nominations and cut-off deadlines
Importance of registering correctly
The IEC emphasised that an early announcement of the election date is critical for voters to decide where they will be on voting day.
For example, students studying in one province but ordinarily residing in another must know where they will be to register correctly, avoiding administrative issues closer to election day.
The Commission also reminded voters that in local government elections, there is no facility to vote outside the ward where they are registered.
This ensures that residents vote for ward councillors representing their own communities, maintaining a direct link between voters and local governance.
Bearing fruit
The IEC’s nationwide Online Voter Registration Campaign is starting to bear fruit.
Between November 2025 and March 2026, a total of 260 205 new registrations were recorded.
Of these, 128 113 voters registered through the IEC’s Voter Management Devices (VMDs), while 132 092 registered via the online self-service portal.
This took the total registered to more than 27.7 million. Young voters remain a priority, with 7.7 million aged 16-35 now registered.
Eligible South Africans are urged to take advantage of the June registration weekend to ensure their right to vote is fully exercised in the forthcoming local elections.
