Chris Hampton describes what Tosh Lupoi most taught him with Ducks
· Yahoo Sports
It's not an easy task to succeed someone who's enjoyed tremendous amounts of success, much like defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi did during his time with the Oregon Ducks. He did so well that he was hired by his alma mater, the California Golden Bears, as the program's new head coach.

His successor came from within the Ducks' program, as Chris Hampton was promoted from defensive backs coach to defensive coordinator, filling the vacant role that Lupoi left.
Under Lupoi, Oregon's defense had an outstanding season in 2025, finishing 12th in the nation in points allowed and ranking as the No. 1 pass defense for much of the regular season. It followed a trend of similar dominance since Lupoi was tabbed as the Ducks' defensive coordinator by head coach Dan Lanning in January of 2022.
All of the success that Lupoi had doesn't make Hampton's job any easier, as he enters his first offseason as the defensive coordinator with heightened expectations. While that's certainly difficult to follow up, Hampton noted that values the lessons that he learned during his time working alongside Lupoi.
"Tosh was extremely organized," Hampton said in an exclusive interview with the Bleav in Oregon Podcast. "You know, each and every day he brought it. No one will ever outwork Tosh. He works extremely hard. You know, I don't know when the guy sleeps. He’s got tremendous work ethic. So the biggest thing I learned from him was just, you know, organization and being detailed and just being on top of each and every day."
Since becoming the head coach of the Golden Bears, Lupoi has shared multiple stories of his recruiting forays, such as sleeping at an airport in Hawai'i during a one-day trip to convince quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele to stay with the program.
For those within the Oregon program, those stories likely don't surprise them. And for Hampton, Lupoi's work ethic and organization is a blueprint to follow as he aims to accomplish even more as the leader of the Ducks' defense.
