Pep Guardiola’s side went out of the competition with a 5-1 aggregate defeat over the two legs. Last night’s match saw City play over 70 minutes with ten men after Bernardo Silva was sent off for a deliberate handball on the goal line to keep out a Vinicius Junior shot. Vinicius Junior converted the subsequent penalty and gave Real Madrid a 4-0 aggregate lead. From that point onward, there was every reason for City to capitulate to an embarrassing defeat. Instead, Pep Guardiola’s side dug in and fought out last night’s match until the final whistle.

Manchester City showed that the spirit and character in this team is strong.
Once Bernardo Silva was sent off and Vinicius Junior gave Real Madrid a 4-0 aggregate lead at the Etihad Stadium last night, Manchester City were up against it. Instead of feeling sorry for themselves, every player on the pitch went above and beyond for the cause. City pressed forward and defended for their lives when required, trying to get back into the tie. Erling Haaland equalized in the 41st minute to make the game 1-1 and give themselves hope in the tie.
In the second half City had more than enough chances to make it 2-1 on the night. Jeremy Doku and Rayan Ait-Nouri had goals ruled out for offside and a host of good chances were squandered. When Vinicius Junior scored Real Madrid’s winner in the 93rd minute it did feel like a harsh blow for Manchester City. Pep Guardiola is excited for the future of his team.
Speaking after his team exited the Champions League last night, Pep Guardiola said that he is excited for the future of this Manchester City team. He explained: “They always have shown [incredible spirit]. It’s tough [being] 3-0 down and then 4-0 at 10 v 11, it’s almost impossible.”
“When I analyse the game, I love the way we started and played, I would love to play 11 v 11 but in football these circumstances happen. Madrid are an extraordinary team and punish you when you make a mistake. The future will be bright and next season we will be back. We will learn.”
Pep Guardiola added that City have several players who have now experienced the Champions League and they should be better placed for next season and beyond. He added: “Next season I don’t know what happens but of course Khusanov, Cherki, Semenyo, it’s the first time they play Champions League. This can take time. I see a lot of good players and many good things.”
