UNC may be on the search for a new head coach.

The University of North Carolina was bounced from the tournament Thursday by mid-major, VCU.  A feat that has become a reoccurring theme as of late in Chapel Hill. The team held a 19-point lead before being forced into overtime and ultimately losing in the closing seconds of the extra period

Tar Heels head coach Hubert Davis holds a career record of 125-54 in his five years with the program. With a win percentage of nearly 70 percent many wonder why he would be on the hot seat? The answer is simple. He’s fallen short of expectations in the tournament.

According to CBS Sports' Matt Norlander, Davis' "future is in doubt. UNC AD Bubba Cunningham texts decision will be made in the coming days." He added, "Boosters are privately saying they've lost faith in the program under Davis moving forward."

In his last two appearances UNC has failed to make it out of the first round. Hubert has a winning record in the tournament at 9-4, but hasn’t seen the national championship since 2022

The prestigious college has been looked at as a strong opponent with a rich history of winning. While they have continued to show that in the regular season, the tournament is a different story and it seems from various reports that the boosters have grown tired of the lack of championships coming to UNC.

Now it’s not certain whether he will be leaving the program entirely or his role would be relegated to administrative duties. Davis is currently in conversation with the program on where the direction is headed. If a change is made, it would mean a major buyout for UNC. A move that could cause astronomical ripple effects that could change the foundation of the program.
