Davis was the successor to legendary head coach Roy Williams. He was an assistant coach to Williams from 2012 until Williams’ retirement in 2021, and he helped coach the Tar Heels to a national championship in 2017. People thought Davis would lead the Tar Heels to deep runs in the March Madness tournament as well.

His tenure started strongly. In the 2021-22 season, he led the Tar Heels to a 29-10 record and a runner-up finish in the NCAA tournament to the Kansas Jayhawks. However, the Tar Heels never reached those heights ever again in his tenure.
In the 2022-23 season, they went 20-13 and missed the tournament entirely. They bounced back in the 2023-24 season, winning the ACC with a 17-3 conference record in the regular season. However, they lost to the tenth-seeded North Carolina State Wolfpack in the ACC Championship, and the Alabama Crimson Tide eliminated them in the Sweet 16.
After that, the Tar Heels suffered defeats in the Round of 64 for two straight seasons, first to the sixth-seeded Ole Miss Rebels in last year’s tournament and then to the eleventh-seeded VCU Rams in overtime during this year’s tournament. That was the loss that cost Davis his job.
It should be noted that the Tar Heels were without leading scorer Caleb Wilson, who broke his thumb on March 6. Still, the Tar Heels will be looking for a new voice to lead them to their first national championship since 2017.
