Tourist injured on Robberg Nature Reserve trail
The first incident occurred at 14:56 on Monday, 6 April, when NSRI Plettenberg Bay duty crew were activated following reports of a woman injured while hiking on the Robberg Nature Reserve trail.
CapeNature officials were alerted and NSRI crews responded in private vehicles, while additional crew members deployed a rescue vehicle from the NSRI Plettenberg Bay Station 14 base.
Sea conditions in the area were reported to be unfavourable for a rescue craft operation.
Upon arrival at the Robberg Nature Reserve parking area, rescuers hiked to the patient’s location at The Gap, where a 62-year-old tourist from Taiwan, accompanied by her husband, was found.
She was treated on the scene for injuries sustained during the hike, with a CapeNature ranger also assisting.
After stabilising the patient, NSRI crew carried her along the trail back to the parking area before escorting the couple in their private vehicle to a local hospital. She was later transferred to a hospital in Knysna for further care.
The patient is expected to make a full recovery. The operation concluded at 16:21.
Second rescue at Keurbooms Beach
A second rescue operation was launched the following day.
At 12:06 on Tuesday, 7 April, NSRI Plettenberg Bay duty crew were alerted to reports of another injured woman at Cathedral Rock on Keurbooms Beach.
The 68-year-old woman from Langebaan had reportedly been walking on the beach with her husband through a gap at Cathedral Rock during low tide when an incoming set of waves caused her to sustain an injury.
NSRI crews responded from the station base and in private vehicles.
On arrival, NSRI medics provided medical treatment and stabilised the patient before carrying her off the beach to a rescue vehicle. The couple were then escorted to hospital where she was placed in the care of doctors and nurses.
While the woman sustained a serious injury and is expected to require ongoing medical treatment, she is also expected to make a full recovery.
The operation concluded at 14:06.
