Justin Trudeau’s son Xavier is delighted his father has found happiness again in his new relationship with pop star Katy Perry.

The aspiring 18-year-old musician launched his own career under the name Xav, and in a new appearance on the Can’t Be Censored podcast, he said he’s been able to lean on his dad’s girlfriend to get her thoughts on his tunes.

“When I’m really happy with a song (I) send it (to her),” Xav, 18, said. “She’s always happy to give me advice or tell me what I should change. She’s super nice. She’s super down to earth. She’s great. I think that my dad’s happy, so that’s important.”

Toronto rapper Drake has also been a sounding board for Xav’s music, which has racked up hundreds of thousands of views on his YouTube channel .

Hosts Travis Dhanraj and Karman Wong referenced an earlier interview they conducted Trudeau’s ex-wife — and Xav’s mother — Sophie Gregoire.

“We were asking your mom what this is like to see pictures (of Perry and Trudeau together) and she said it was ‘noise.’ Is it noise to you sometimes as well?” Dhanraj asked.

Growing up in the public eye, Xav said he was used to it, and that seeing Instagram snaps of his father and Perry together is “just like any other picture of my dad and my mom. Or just my dad.”

“My life is so crazy sometimes,” Xav continued. “Sometimes I sit there and I’m like, ‘What is my life? What the hell?'” he said. “I just laugh. But the reality of it is, it’s my life. What can I do? What can I change?”

Even though his father is considered one of Canada’s most reviled personalities , with the former prime minister being held accountable for the country’s stagnant economy, stalled job growth, poor housing affordability, unchecked mass immigration and more, Xav told Dhanraj and Wong that he is resistant to the haters and that his Instagram reels still rack up “hundreds of thousands of views.”

“Little carbon tax,” he replied when asked if he had a favourite putdown. “That one is good. That one is funny. But they use it so much … Don’t saturate it too much.”

Sometimes when he sees mean tweets and comments on Instagram, Xav will co-sign the posts. “I like the comments. ‘That’s funny. I’ll give you that one,'” he said.

When Wong brought up the father and son’s trip to watch the Barbie movie in 2023, Xav said the intense scrutiny the photo received was a boost to his career.

“That helped me get my face out there,” he said. “I hate to say it … People still talk about that and that creates more publicity. I rolled my eyes when I saw my dad posted it. But … I knew it was going to happen.”

‘The hate gets to me sometimes’

Despite insisting that he mostly tunes out his critics, Xav admitted that he’s not always immune to arrows being shot his way. Some of the barbs being aimed at him do sting on occasion.

“The hate gets to me sometimes,” Xav confessed. “But it’s built into my brain … when someone comments on my (music) video or shares my video … it just helps me. Instagram realizes people are interacting with this stuff.”

But Xav said he’s embarrassed for the people sending mean comments his way. “I feel for you guys,” he said, briefly turning to the camera. “I’m 18. I’m so not political. I’m just a kid who has a dream that’s going to do it and make it, regardless of the thousands of people who don’t want me to.”

Xav also said that he doesn’t read much that’s written about him. “My whole life, I’ve been told, ‘Don’t read comments.’ I know why … The reality of it is, sometimes there’s too much to read,” he said.

He also isn’t interested in debating with strangers over some of his dad’s political decisions while he was in office.

“I just feel bad for them, to be honest,” he said. “I’m 18 … what are you doing? Like respectfully.”

Perry and Trudeau all smiles together

Before going Instagram official in December , Perry and Trudeau first sparked dating rumours last July when the former prime minister was spotted having dinner with the Roar singer in Montreal.

This week, Perry shared an Instagram carousel that featured a smiling photo of the pair.

“Never knew karma could be so rewarding,” Perry, 41, captioned her post.

In another candid snap, Perry and Trudeau poked fun at their “ age gap .”

“How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you were?” she captioned the image.

In February, Perry, who shares 5-year-old daughter Daisy Dove with ex-fiance Orlando Bloom, posted a photo alongside the one-time drama teacher as they hit the slopes together. “Let love be the revolution,” she wrote.

Speaking to PEOPLE , one source said that Trudeau, who shares three children with Sophie Gregoire, won Perry over because he made an effort to see her while she was on the road with her Lifetimes Tour last year.

“She fell for him early on because he really showed that he was interested,” the insider said last month . “They’ve already had to navigate a lot of logistics. The fact that they’ve been willing to do that says a lot about how serious they are about each other.”

Back in October, a source told the Daily Mail that “Katy is very, very interested in him.”

“She says he’s a real catch, a high-quality guy. She keeps a lot of details to herself, but she clearly still likes him a lot,” they said. “If there’s anyone worth having a long-distance relationship with, it’s him. She likes him a lot. He likes her a lot. I’d even say they’re enamoured.”
