Firing season is upon us, and two ACC schools made immediate moves after the season ended for their teams: Georgia Tech has fired Damon Stoudamire, and Boston College is done with Earl Grant.

Stoudamire looked like he might do well. He beat Duke in his first season, and Baye Ndongo looked like a real find. Naithan George was a solid point guard, too.

Well, the best-laid plans and all of that. We admired the guts Georgia Tech showed last year when the team was devastated by injuries, but this year was awful and it’s hard to blame the Yellow Jackets brain trust for making a move.

There’s nothing official but rumors, but we’ve heard Chris Carrawell’s name attached to this job. He’d be a great fit in a lot of ways. We’ll see how that works out.

So has former NC State guard Justin Gainey. Currently a Tennessee assistant, like C-Well, Gainey has never been a head coach, but Tech’s A.D., Ryan Alpert, came to Atlanta after a stint at Tennessee, which could help Gainey.

BC is in a worse situation, and it’s going to take an unusual coach to turn that ship around. The school hired Grant with the idea that hard work could to an extent overcome talent and money. Well, to an extent, but not much of one, as it turned out. He’s a good man, but BC needs to do a lot of structural work to make this a relevant program again. This should be an interesting process.

One name that has come up in the rumor mill: Kentucky’s Mark Pope, who may lose his job soon, too. Another name to keep an eye on: Merrimack’s Joey Gallo.
