Mississippi State Bulldogs sign ACC linebacker transfer

Jeff Lebby and the Mississippi State Bulldogs have made another addition to their roster, signing Syracuse transfer linebacker James Heard on Thursday, according to On3's Pete Nakos.

Heard spent the past two seasons at Syracuse after starting his career with the West Virginia Mountaineers in 2023. He played in 22 games for the Orange, recording seven tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss, and one interception. He did record a stat during the 2025 season.
He is originally from Camden, New Jersey, and signed with West Virginia as a three-star recruit in the 2023 recruiting cycle. He played in three games for them and did not record a stat, taking a redshirt season. He will have two seasons of eligibility at Mississippi State.
Heard is ranked as the No. 2078 overall player and No. 193 linebacker in the transfer portal by On3.
Mississippi State has now signed 25 transfers this offseason, including 12 defensive players and three linebackers. The group is ranked 13th in the county and 6th in the SEC by On3.
